Alexander Graham Bell’s Wife

12 Nov

It was a pain in the behind being Mrs. Alexander Graham Bell. Lately, even her close friends had heard her being called that so often they accidentally referred to her as, Allie. She dearly appreciated all the comforts that her brilliant husband, the good doctor had bestowed on her.  But she thought she’d give it all up in a wink just to never again answer the question– Isn’t it marvelous to live with a genius? for the umpteenth time.

The real answer was very, very difficult and maddening with occasional nice periods at breakfast. Once, with a reporter hovering nearby, she almost let this thought fly from her mouth like a bird from a bush but she caught herself and had a slight fit of coughing.

She enjoyed the parties and the meeting of famous people. Though, it was rare to meet someone who wasn’t a disappointment.  Mark Twain was not a disappointment.

Most of all she resented the impertinences. Total strangers would harangue her with tales of meals that were interrupted by wrong numbers.  Or wash tubs that were overturned while rushing to answer unsolicited calls from salesmen.  And how many times must she tell them that she didn’t know when it would be possible to call someone and get through even the person was talking to another party at the time.  Just go over and ring their doorbell she would think but never say.

And now the good Doctor was gone.  She would certainly miss the parties.
