The Unwritten Vows of Fatherhood

11 Jan

If you don’t get all crazy when you turn forty and run out and buy a hell-red sports car or motorcycle. Or both.

If you don’t get a weird, totally unprovable idea in your head that you should be a success in show biz even though you are now fifty and have never had much luck in it before. (Like the old joke -“Doc will I be able to play the piano?” “Certainly.” “That’s funny I’ve never played before.”)

If you don’t get get all freaky deaky one day and run away leaving the wife and kids in a lurch.

If you don’t dump all your wrath on your off-spring and make their lives miserable because you can never be in the NBA or a rock star or (insert your regret here) because you are too damn old.

If you don’t run around trying to become The Best You You Can Be and let your kids shift for themselves in the cold cruel world.

If you don’t let your kids spend 24/7 in front of the computer, have HBO in their bedroom, teach them the smart
way to cheat at any sport, read to them– ever, or listen to them or praise them or miss them like crazy when they aren’t around.

Or do any of the billion and one things you can do without even trying to screw up their lives.

If somehow you avoid most of these potholes in life you might be a halfway decent Dad someday. And there aren’t many things better than that.

What a beautiful picture! You avoided the potholes & your 3 wonderful offspring are living proof. Cheri and You managed VERY SUCCESSFUL Careers,,but as parents you’re solid gold–in fact “you ought to write a book”. LOL Sioux 🙂

YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPH W/YOUR THREE WONDERFUL CHILDREN HERE. YOU & CHERI HAVE WON MANY AWARDS & ACCOLADES, BUT THE BEST WORK YOU’ VE DONE HAS BEEN KIT, TEDDY & EMMA. AN AMAZING FEAT AS YOU HAD NO ROADMAP–HAVING LOST YOUR OWN DAD AT THE TENDER AGE OF FIVE. HOW PROUD YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER AND AUNT K WOULD BE OF YOU. GOD BLESS. LOVE, SIOUX. 😀
