Stage Mothers: The Mighty Pillars That Hold Up Show Biz.

“Psst, look over there. No, don’t let her see that you’re looking!”

“Where? Who?”

“The one with the dynamite eyes and gorgeous face. Not as gorgeous as yours, of course. You’re drop dead gorgeous. No competition and it’s a free country and an open call, but that’s the one you have to watch out for. That’s Emma. She’s got the guts of a burglar and nerves of titanium. Worst of all– she’s got talent!
Sings like a dream. Acts like a tornado. And the personality of a Jolson or maybe Durante.”

“So, we’re cooked?”

“Maybe not. Because she’s an artist, too. All that sensitivity and being all vulnerable could help us. …You’re an artist, too. You’re fantastic. You’re like Emma only… louder and stuff. But stop thinking about you all the time. Start thinking about Emma.”

“Who?”

“Oh, my Aunt Fanny’s keister — Emma! And that’s how good she is. No one says Emma Who? She’s the real goods. If you scratch that shiny surface underneath is a surface that glows like the face of God.”

“So, we’re kaput?”

“No, no we just got to throw her off her game. Pick a fight or insult her. Say that you saw her Golden Globes acceptance but that she didn’t thank enough people. That’ll get her so discombobulated she won’t know her left from her… Oh, cripes forget everything. She’s got her mother with her.”
