Sweethearts: A Darn Close to Amazing Love Story

7 May

From the moment he saw her he was head over heels in love. As if felled by a sledgehammer. As if Cupid had split his heart asunder with a bull’s-eye.

The weird thing is that from the start he never thought “Oh, yeah this is the girl for me!” or “I’m going to spend an average of 23 hours a day with her” or “sure, hell why not have a trio of kids with her?”. He didn’t even consider the consequences of leaping into The Great Unknown. Never thought about how much work, energy (all on her part) that it might take.

He just swan dived into the future. He was in love and that is like cruising. Like riding along on a lovely sailboat. You don’t own it. No worries, mate.

And she was awfully fun. A real pepper pot. On a baseball team she’d be the power hitting shortstop. You could not beat her for enthusiasm. But don’t try to douse that enthusiasm or you could get yourself a pretty short haircut.

They had a lot of laughs together. They were both funny and each thought the other one was a riot. Sometimes, their fights even ended with one of them not being able to keep a straight face.

And then one day it came to a crashing halt. Like an angel being kicked out of heaven… Just kidding. Over thirty four years and they’re still… well, sweethearts.

Swan dives have their benefits. But not always. Sometimes, on the way down, you realize the pool has been drained.
